3.1 Formatting of the reference list

  • Begin the reference list on a new page after the text (before any tables, figures, or appendices).
  • Choose one of the following fonts (use this font throughout the entire document):
    • sans serif fonts such as 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, or 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode, OR
    • serif fonts such as 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, or Normal (10-point) Computer Modern.
  • Type “References” (in bold) at the top of the page, centered.
  • Double-space the entire reference list (within and between entries).
  • Use a hanging indent (the first line of the reference runs flush with the left margin, each subsequent line jumps in 1.27 cm (0.5 inch). This is how you make a hanging indent in Word:
    1. Highlight the reference with your cursor.
    2. Right click.
    3. Select Paragraph.
    4. Under Indentation, select Special and Hanging.
  • Put a period after each element of a reference (author, date, title, and source). Omit the period if the reference ends with a DOI or URL. For an explanation per element, see Subsection 3.5: Reference elements. .
