2.2. Web of Science: Results page

❶ Sort order

You can adjust the order in which your results are displayed. By default, they are sorted by Relevance, but this can be changed using the drop-down menu located to the right of the Export button. Selecting Citations: highest first is especially helpful for identifying the most influential articles on a topic. Other sorting options include Date: newest first, Date: oldest first, and more.

Filtering results

Use the Refine Results feature to filter your search results. The first option allows you to search within your current results. Key filters include:

  • Publication Years
  • Document Types: Articles, review articles, book chapters, proceedings papers (published conference papers)
  • Web of Science Categories (broad fields of study)
  • Authors
  • Publication Titles (typically refers to journal titles)

Full text access options

Web of Science offers several options for accessing full text:

  • Free Full Text from Publisher – The article is open access and freely available on the publisher’s site.
  • Free Published or Accepted Article from Repository – The article has been deposited in a repository. An accepted article is a pre-print version that has not yet been formatted for publication. Whenever possible, use the published version.
  • Full Text from Publisher – Links to the publisher’s website. Sometimes the article is freely available, but in other cases, the publisher may charge for access. Never pay for an article—if the TiU library does not provide access, you can request it through the Interlibrary Loan system.
  • TiUfinder – May provide access to the article’s full text through another TiU database, though availability is not guaranteed.

 Citation searching

For each result (except for very recent publications), a clickable citation count is displayed, showing how many times the item has been cited in other works indexed in Web of Science. Clicking on the Citations link will display the list of citing works (mostly articles).

Begin a new search or update existing search

To begin a new search or add more criteria to your current one, click in the search box. This will give you the option to reset all search fields.
