Good and trustworthy research is based on the five widely supported principles in the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity: honesty, scrupulousness, transparency, independence and responsibility. Responsible research practices improve the scientific processes that lead to knowledge and understanding that can contribute to society. Responsible research practices include following regulations, complying with codes of conduct and taking professional, legal and ethical responsibility. In the ALLEA European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity as well as in the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity a number of standards for good research practices are described. In chapter 2 these will be addressed.
