Introduction

This module is about the reading process. It covers issues such as what you do before, while and after you read an academic text in order to become “a good reader”. Information about genre and text structure (module 2) and reading strategies (module 3) can be applied in the first steps of the reading process.

By the end of this module, you will be able to...

  • employ a range of reading strategies to aid your comprehension of a text; 
  • independently monitor your reading progress;
  • use bottom-up & top-down processing; 
  • answer questions: pre-reading task; 
  • define your purpose for reading;
  • use graphic/semantic organizers; 
  • take notes efficiently;
  • summarize what you’ve read.
