Tackling Information Problems (TIP): Introduction

Information Literacy tutorial for undergraduate students

Set-up of the tutorial

The tutorial is divided into 4 modules. Each module is self-contained.

The modules are arranged in a logical order and build on one another, so we recommend that you read them in sequence - unless you just need to brush up on one or two topics.

Requirements

Completion of the InfoSkills tutorial for first-year and pre-master's students.

Welcome to the TIP tutorial

The university library welcomes you to the Tackling Information Problems (TIP) tutorial, an information literacy tutorial designed for bachelor's students. TIP builds upon the introductory Information Literacy tutorial all students must complete during their first year at Tilburg University.

When you get a writing assignment at university, you're faced with an 'information problem' that you need to solve in a short period of time. How do you track down the appropriate information to underpin the argument you're going to make in your paper, essay, or thesis? Searching and processing information for an academic text is a complex process that requires you to identify your information needs, locate corresponding information sources, extract and organize relevant information from each source, and synthesize information from a variety of sources. This process is called information-problem solving.

To help you plan and perform an effective search for the information you want, we developed a step-by-step plan you can follow.

Step-by-step plan

  1. Defining the information problem
    • Choose and explore your topic
    • Formulate your research question
    • Determine what kind of information you need
  2. Searching for information
    • Select appropriate information sources
    • Identify search terms
    • Create and perform effective searches
  3. Evaluating information
    • Assess relevance of the information found
    • Assess reliability of the information found
  4. Using information
    • Synthesize information
    • Incorporate information into your text
    • Cite your sources
