When you get a writing assignment at university, you're faced with an 'information problem' that you need to solve in a short period of time. How do you track down the appropriate information to underpin the argument you're going to make in your paper, essay, or thesis? Searching and processing information for an academic text is a complex process that requires you to identify your information needs, locate corresponding information sources, extract and organize relevant information from each source, and synthesize information from a variety of sources. This process is called information-problem solving.
