NWO heeft een nieuw financieringsinstrument gelanceerd speciaal voor de publicatie van Open Access boeken. Door NWO gefinancierde onderzoekers kunnen 10.000 euro aanvragen per boekpublicatie.
NWO stimuleert onderzoekers om boeken Open Access te publiceren, omdat publicaties dan tot wel vijftig procent meer geciteerd worden, en een veel groter bereik krijgen. Elke onderzoeker gesubsidieerd door NWO kan een beroep doen op het financieringsinstrument voor boeken, ook als het onderzoek reeds is afgerond.
Voorwaarde is wel dat het manuscript de peer review procedure heeft doorgemaakt. Er is maximaal 10.000 euro beschikbaar voor betaling van de zogeheten Book Processing Charge (BPC) die uitgevers rekenen voor Open Access publiceren.
Een aanvraag indienen kan via de website van NWO. TiU-onderzoeker Alfred Archer kreeg al een Open Access aanvraag bij NWO gehonoreerd voor het boek Honouring and Admiring the Immoral: An Ethical Guide, dat wordt gepubliceerd door Routledge.

NWO launched a new and special funding instrument for publishing scholarly books Open Access. NWO-funded researchers can request 10.000 euro for publishing an Open Access book.
The Dutch funder for scientific research NWO stresses that academic books published Open Access are downloaded more often and are being cited up to 50 percent more, which renders them more visible inside and outside academia.
When a book is the output of a NWO-project, the writer can apply for 10.000 euro to publish it fully Open Access. The funding must be used to cover for the Book Processing Charges demanded by the publisher. A book project is eligible when the peer review procedure is finished. Books finished after the formal closure of the NWO research project also qualify if the other demands are met.
Applications can be made on a continuous basis via the website of the special funding instrument. One researcher of Tilburg, Alfred Archer, already obtained funding for his OA book Honouring and Admiring the Immoral: An Ethical Guide, to be published by Routledge.
