Maximum aantal publicaties in Springer open access deal bereikt

Op 27 oktober 2021 is het maximum aantal artikelen bereikt dat overeen gekomen is in de open access overeenkomst met Springer.

In het contract van de VSNU met uitgever Springer Nature voor de periode 2018-2021 is een jaarlijks maximum aantal artikelen vastgelegd dat door corresponderende auteurs van de Nederlandse universiteiten en UMC’s in open access gepubliceerd mag worden. Dit is ook bij andere uitgevers soms het geval (lees hier meer). Dat houdt in dat Nederlandse wetenschappers tot het afgesproken maximum zonder extra kosten open access kunnen publiceren. Het maximum voor uitgever Springer Nature is nu bereikt.

Wat nu?

• Bij Springer vindt de keuze voor open access plaats NADAT een artikel geaccepteerd is (acceptatie op inhoud). Dit is helemaal op het eind van het proces.
• Als je een artikel bij Springer ingediend hebt, en het wordt dit jaar geaccepteerd na 27 oktober, kies dan NIET voor ‘Publish open access’. Doe je dat wel, dan zul je een rekening voor de APCs ontvangen. Kies daarom voor ‘Publish subscription’ en maak gebruik van de alternatieven die hieronder beschreven worden om je artikel openbaar te maken. 
• Mocht het om een of andere reden niet goed gaan, dan heeft Tilburg nog een korte tijd de mogelijkheid om drie artikelen binnen de overeenkomst goed te keuren. Waarschijnlijk zal het hier gaan om artikelen die net na het bereiken van het quotum geaccepteerd worden. Meer dan drie artikelen is beslist niet mogelijk!
• Springer geeft in de workflow voor de auteur zeer waarschijnlijk geen melding over het niet meer gebruik kunnen maken van de VSNU-overeenkomst!
• Dit alles geldt alleen voor de artikelen in de tijdschriften die binnen de overeenkomst vallen, de hybride tijdschriften. Artikelen in full open access journals van Springer vielen al nooit binnen de overeenkomst.

Mogelijkheden om tóch zonder kosten open access te publiceren

Openbaarmaking van de uitgeversversie op basis van artikel 25fa van de Nederlandse auteurswet is een goed alternatief. Na een redelijke termijn van 6 maanden kan de publicatie alsnog openbaar gemaakt worden via de universitaire repository. Voor Tilburg is dat Pure ofwel de Tilburg University Research Portal. Dit alternatief staat ook bekend onder de naam Taverne-amendement.

Een ander alternatief is groen open access publiceren. Je uploadt de AAM-versie (accepted author manuscript) in de universitaire repository. Springer legt hierbij in de meeste gevallen een embargo op voor een periode van 12 maanden.

On 27 October 2021 the maximum number of articles agreed in the open access agreement with Springer has been reached.

In the VSNU contract for 2018-2021 with publisher Springer Nature a yearly maximum number of articles that can be published in open access by corresponding authors of the Dutch universities and UMC’s is agreed upon. This is also the case in some other deals with publishers (read more). Until the maximum is reached, researchers can publish their article in open access without extra costs. That maximum has now been reached for publisher Springer Nature.

What to do next?

• When you’re publishing at Springer, the choice for open access takes place AFTER an article has been accepted (acceptance on content). This is at the very end of the process.
• If you have submitted an article, and it is accepted this year after 27 October, do NOT choose 'Publish open access'. If you do, you will receive a bill for the APCs. Therefore, choose 'Publish subscription' and use the alternatives described below to make your article publicly available.
• If for some reason it does not go as it should, Tilburg has a short time left to approve three articles within the agreement. Most likely, these will be articles that are accepted just after the quota is reached. More than three articles is definitely not possible!
• During the workflow, Springer very likely doesn’t inform you about not being able to use the VSNU agreement anymore!
• All this applies only to articles in journals that are part of the agreement, the hybrid journals. Articles in full open access journals from Springer were never covered by the agreement.

Possibilities to publish in open access without any costs

Publication of the publisher's version of your article based on article 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act is a good alternative. After a reasonable period of six months the publication can still be made public via the university repository. For Tilburg, that is Pure or the Tilburg University Research Portal. This alternative is also known as the Taverne amendment.

Another alternative is green open access publishing. You upload the AAM version (accepted author manuscript) into the university repository. In most cases, Springer will apply an embargo for a period of 12 months.
