Deze week, van 21 tot en met 27 oktober 2024 is het Internationale Open Access Week. Het thema dit jaar is 'Community over Commercialization'. In deze zin zijn scholar-led en community-driven Open Access initiatieven, zoals die met Diamond Open Access model, van bijzonder belang om bij te dragen aan een meer verantwoord uitgeverslandschap, maar ook om de discussie rond deze onderwerpen te bevorderen.
In Nederland wint Diamond Open Access aan momentum en er wordt aan gewerkt om het te versterken over de verschillende onderzoeksgebieden en tussen de verschillende belanghebbenden van het wetenschappelijke communicatiesysteem. Deze omvatten inspanningen op het gebied van belangenbehartiging en bewustmaking, maar ook het vergemakkelijken van de praktische implementatie van Diamond Open Access-modellen.
NWO heeft een call aangekondigd om wetenschappelijke tijdschriften te ondersteunen bij de overgang van een abonnementsmodel naar een diamond open access-model. Tijdschriften kunnen binnenkort financiering aanvragen via het Diamond Open Access-fonds, dat in deze ronde in totaal €500.000 beschikbaar heeft.
Deze subsidie is bedoeld voor redacties, academische genootschappen, stichtingen en verenigingen die hun bestaande abonnementstijdschriften willen omzetten naar diamond open access. Elk project kan tot €50.000 ontvangen om de kosten te dekken die gepaard gaan met deze overgang naar een non-profit diamond open access-model.
Van tijdschriften wordt verwacht dat ze binnen maximaal 24 maanden een duurzaam bedrijfsmodel opzetten om hun voortbestaan na de subsidieperiode te garanderen. Aanvragen staan open voor onderzoekers verbonden aan Nederlandse universiteiten, hogescholen en andere onderzoeksinstellingen. Daarnaast komen ook redacteuren van internationale tijdschriften in aanmerking voor deze financiering.

Wil je graag je boek Open Access publiceren, maar kun je de forse Book Processing Charge (BPC) niet betalen? Dan is Diamond Open Access Books misschien de juiste publicatieroute voor je, omdat er geen kosten voor publicatie in rekening worden gebracht aan auteurs of aan lezers. Bovendien pakt dit model ongelijkheidsproblemen aan, zoals dat bijvoorbeeld open access alleen te betalen is door onderzoekers en instellingen met voldoende financiering. Diamond Open Access is een meer rechtvaardig alternatief voor commercieel publiceren omdat het typisch community gestuurd en zonder winstoogmerk is.
Het Diamond Open Access Expertisecentrum, onderdeel van het programma Versterking van Diamond Open Access in Nederland, organiseert een online evenement gericht op onderzoekers die geïnteresseerd zijn in Open Access Book Publishing.
In deze één uur durende online sessie leer je meer over 1) verschillende modellen voor het uitgeven van boeken (closed, green, gold, bronze, diamond), 2) de New University Presses in Nederland die werken volgens een Diamond OA model, 3) de internationale Diamond OA uitgever Open Book Publishers, en 4) het perspectief van de auteur (door Prof. Dr. Ingrid Robeyns). We zijn benieuwd naar al jullie vragen!

This week, from 21 to 27 October 2024, it is International Open Access Week. As last year, this year's theme is 'Community over Commercialisation'. In this sense, scholar-led and community-driven Open Access initiatives, like those with Diamond Open Access model, are of special importance to contribute to a more responsible publishing landscape, but also to foster the discussion around these topics.
In the Netherlands, Diamond Open Access is gaining momentum and works are being done so to strengthen it across the different research fields and among the different stakeholders of the scholarly communication system. These include efforts around advocacy and awareness, but also facilitating the practical implementations of Diamond Open Access models.
NWO has announced an upcoming call to support academic journals in transitioning from a subscription-based model to a diamond open access model. Journals will soon be able to apply for funding through the Diamond Open Access fund, which has a total of €500,000 available in this round.
This grant aims to support editors, academic societies, foundations, and associations seeking to convert their existing subscription journals to diamond open access. Each project can receive up to €50,000 to cover costs associated with this transition to a non-profit, diamond open access model.
Journals are expected to establish a sustainable business model within a maximum of 24 months to ensure their continued operation beyond the grant period. Applications are open to researchers affiliated with Dutch universities, universities of applied sciences, and other research institutions. Additionally, editors of international journals are also eligible for this funding.

Then Diamond Open Access Books might be the right route for you as no publication fees are charged to authors or readers. In addition, this model addresses inequality issues in which open access is reserved only for researchers and institutions with sufficient funding. Diamond Open Access is a more equitable alternative to commercial publishing as it is typically community-led and non-profit.
The Diamond Open Access Expertise Center, part of the program Strengthening Diamond Open Access in the Netherlands, is organizing an online event aimed at researchers interested in Open Access Book Publishing.
In this one-hour online session you will learn about 1) different models of book publishing (closed, green, gold, bronze, diamond),2) the New University Presses in the Netherlands that operate under a Diamond OA model, 3) the international Diamond OA Book publisher Open Book Publishers, and 4) hear the author’s perspective on OA book publishing provided by Prof. Dr. Ingrid Robeyns.
