Diamond Open Access, dat vaak in verband wordt gebracht met community-driven en non-profit uitgeversinitiatieven zoals universitaire en door wetenschappers geleide uitgeverijen, begint meer zichtbaarheid te krijgen in het systeem van wetenschappelijke communicatie vanwege de duurzame en meer rechtvaardige waarden. Dit komt omdat uitgeversinitiatieven die een open toegangsmodel volgen noch de auteur noch de lezer iets in rekening brengen, terwijl de kwaliteit van de uitgeversdiensten behouden blijft. Bovendien zijn de uitgeversinitiatieven die dit model volgen - tijdschriften of boeken - ook vaak geassocieerd met kleinschalige uitgeverijen die meertaligheid bevorderen, wat een gezonde en evenwichtige omgeving voor wetenschappelijke communicatie bevordert, wat ook bekend staat als bibliodiversiteit. Dergelijke principes staan ook dichter bij het bereiken van maatschappelijke impact en zijn erop gericht om de controle over het publicatieproces terug te geven aan de onderzoeker.
Daarom is een dergelijk model, dat door de community wordt aangestuurd en door wetenschappers wordt geleid en dat de academische gemeenschap in staat stelt om de macht over het systeem van wetenschappelijke communicatie terug te krijgen, zo belangrijk om een positieve open onderzoekscultuur te bevorderen. Omdat een dergelijk model een ideologie zonder winstoogmerk volgt, heeft het echter ook de aandacht en investering van de gemeenschap zelf nodig om te kunnen gedijen. Dergelijke investeringen worden meestal ondersteund door universiteitsbibliotheken.
Bij Tilburg University is diamond open access een belangrijk onderwerp op de agenda. We hebben onze eigen open access universitaire pers - Open Press Tilburg University - die auteurs in staat stelt hun onderzoek te publiceren als een open access boek, of het nu een monografie, een tekstboek, een scriptie of een essay is. Daarnaast ondersteunt de bibliotheek ook verschillende open infrastructuren, nationaal en internationaal, die het mogelijk maken om zowel boeken als tijdschriften open access te publiceren. Een nationaal voorbeeld is het Nederlandse platform openjournals.nl, gehost bij de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) en gesponsord door de Nederlandse Onderzoeksraad (NWO), dat al enkele Tilburg University open access tijdschriften host, zoals Technology and Regulation en Passion.
De bibliotheek heeft zich onlangs aangesloten bij het Open Book Collective (OBC). OBC is een collectief financieringsmodel dat bibliotheken en andere instellingen in staat stelt om verschillende uitgeefinitiatieven te steunen die zich inzetten voor diamond open access. Dit zijn zowel gerenommeerde open access uitgevers die kwaliteitsboeken uitgeven op de onderzoeksgebieden van Tilburg University, als open infrastructuur die het behoud, de verpreiding en de vindbaarheid van open access boeken op de lange termijn verzekert. Onze bibliotheeksponsoring omvat beide initiatieven en biedt daarmee cruciale steun aan een internationale groep initiatieven die werken aan een bibliodiverse toekomst voor open access boeken. Dergelijke steun is ook wat uitgevers helpt om af te stappen van Book Processing Charges (BPC's), die algemeen bekend staan om hun hoge en ondoorzichtige kosten. Tilburg University auteurs die geïnteresseerd zijn in het publiceren van een open access boek volgens de diamond route worden dan uitgenodigd om de mogelijkheden te verkennen met dergelijke uitgevers, met in het achterhoofd dat hun publicatie open beschikbaar zal zijn, waardoor hun onderzoek meer zichtbaarheid en impact zal krijgen.

Diamond open access, which is often related to community-driven and not-for-profit publishing initiatives like university and scholar-led presses, has begun to gain more visibility in the scholarly communication system due to its sustainable and more equitable values. This is because publishing initiatives that follow a diamond open access model do not charge either the author or the reader while maintaining the quality of publishing services. Additionally, the publishing initiatives that follow this model –journals or books – are also often associated with small-scale publishing houses that foster multilingualism that promotes a healthy and balanced scholarly communication environment, which is also known as bibliodiversity. Such principles are also closer to reaching societal impact while aiming to return control of the publishing process to the researcher.
This is why such a model, one that is community-driven and scholarly-led and enables the academic community to regain power over the scholarly communication system, is so important to foster a positive open research culture. However, because such a model follows a not-for-profit ideology, for it to thrive it also requires the attention and investment of the community itself. Such investment is usually supported by university libraries.
At Tilburg University, diamond open access is an important topic on the agenda. We have our own diamond open access university press – Open Press Tilburg University - that empowers authors to publish their research as an open access book, be it a monograph, a textbook, a thesis, or an essay. Furthermore, the library also supports several open infrastructures, national and international, that enable the open access publishing of both books and journals. One national example is the Dutch platform openjournals.nl, hosted at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and sponsored by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), which hosts already some Tilburg University open access journals, like Technology and Regulation and Passion.
Shifting again to the diamond open access book landscape, the library has recently become a supporter of the Open Book Collective (OBC). OBC is a collective funding model that enables libraries and other institutions to support several publishing initiatives that are committed to diamond open access. These include renowned open access publishers that publish quality books in Tilburg University research fields, as well as open infrastructure that assures the long-term preservation, dissemination and findability of open access books. Our library sponsorship includes both initiatives, providing crucial support to an international group of initiatives working to build a bibliodiverse future for open access books. Such support is also what helps publishers involved in moving away from Book Processing Charges (BPCs), commonly known for their high and non-transparent costs. Tilburg University authors interested in publishing an open access book following the diamond route are then invited to explore possibilities with such publishers, keeping in mind that their publication will be openly available, attracting more visibility and impact to their research.
