Maximum aantal open access artikelen Springer mogelijk in november 2022 bereikt

Het maximum aantal open access artikelen dat in 2022 'kosteloos' bij Springer kan worden gepubliceerd, wordt naar verwachting begin november bereikt.

Sinds 2015 kunnen corresponderende auteurs die geaffilieerd zijn aan de Nederlandse universiteiten 'kosteloos' open access publiceren in een groot aantal Springer tijdschriften. De kosten worden door de Nederlandse universiteiten betaald vanwege de Read & Publish-overeenkomst die de universiteiten met Springer afgesloten hebben. Het aantal open access artikelen onder deze consortiumovereenkomst is echter beperkt tot 2080 per jaar. Voor 2022 wordt dit aantal naar verwachting begin november bereikt.

Onderzoekers die geïnformeerd willen worden over de status kunnen zich registreren voor een ‘notify-me service’. Deze service kan ook gebruikt worden om updates te ontvangen over andere uitgevers met een maximum aantal open access publicaties.

Relevante informatie

• Afgaande op de gegevens over 2021: de tijd tussen het indienen van een artikel en acceptatie is zelden korter dan 3 maanden. Mocht je bijv. in oktober een artikel indienen, dan is de kans zeer groot dat het in 2023 geaccepteerd wordt. Je kunt vervolgens gebruik maken van de overeenkomst van 2023.
• Bij Springer vindt de keuze voor open access plaats NADAT een artikel geaccepteerd is (acceptatie op inhoud). Dit is helemaal op het eind van het proces.
• Als je artikel wordt geaccepteerd nadat het maximum bereikt is, kies dan NIET voor ‘Publish open access’. Doe je dat wel, dan ontvang je een rekening voor de APCs. Kies daarom voor ‘Publish subscription’ en maak gebruik van je recht op openbaarmaking via artikel 25fa van de Auteurswet (zie hieronder).
• Springer geeft in de workflow voor de auteur zeer waarschijnlijk geen melding over het niet meer gebruik kunnen maken van de VSNU-overeenkomst! Noot: VSNU heet tegenwoordig UNL, maar in de overeenkomsten wordt nog steeds VSNU gebruikt.
• Dit alles geldt alleen voor de artikelen in de tijdschriften die binnen de overeenkomst vallen, de hybride tijdschriften. Artikelen in full open access journals van Springer vielen al nooit binnen de overeenkomst.

Tóch zonder kosten je artikel openbaar maken

Openbaarmaking van de uitgeversversie op basis van artikel 25fa van de Nederlandse auteurswet is een goed alternatief, dat ook door het CvB ondersteund wordt! Na een ‘redelijke termijn’ van 6 maanden kan de publicatie openbaar gemaakt worden via de universitaire repository. Voor Tilburg is dat Pure ofwel de Tilburg University Research Portal. Dit alternatief is ook bekend als openbaarmaking met een Taverne-licentie.

The maximum number of open access articles that can be published 'free of charge' at Springer in 2022 is expected to be reached in early November.

Since 2015, corresponding authors affiliated with Dutch universities have been able to publish open access articles 'free of charge' in a large number of Springer journals. The costs are paid bij de Dutch universities because of the Read & Publish agreement the universities concluded with Springer. However, the number of open access articles under this consortium agreement is limited to 2080 per year. For 2022, this number is expected to be reached in early November.

Researchers who want to stay informed about the status can sign in for a ‘notify-me service’. This service can also be used to receive updates on other publishers with a maximum number of open access publications.

Relevant information

• Looking at the 2021 data: the time between article submission and acceptance is rarely less than 3 months. Should you submit an article in October, there is a very good chance that it will be accepted in 2023. You can then publish under the 2023 agreement.
• When you’re publishing at Springer, the choice for open access takes place AFTER an article has been accepted (acceptance on content). This is at the very end of the process.
• If your article is accepted after the maximum is reached, do NOT choose "Publish open access. If you do, you will receive a bill for the APCs. Therefore, choose 'Publish subscription' and use your right of disclosure through section 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act (see below).
• During the workflow, Springer very likely doesn’t inform you about not being able to use the VSNU agreement anymore! Note: VSNU is now called UNL, but the agreements still use VSNU.
• All this applies only to articles in journals within the agreement, the hybrid journals. Articles in full open access journals from Springer were never within the agreement.

Alternative to disclose your article without any costs

Article 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act is a good alternative that is also supported by the CvB. After a ‘reasonable period’ of 6 months, the publisher's version of your publication can be made public through the university repository. For Tilburg, this is Pure or the Tilburg University Research Portal. This alternative is also known as disclosure with a Taverne license.
