eBooks bestellen – nog niet zo simpel

Je dient een verzoek in bij de bibliotheek om een eBook aan te schaffen dat je bij een internetshop gezien hebt. Maar dan … krijg je te horen dat het niet door de bibliotheek gekocht kan worden. Hoezo niet?

Hindernissen bij de aanschaf van eBooks

De bibliotheek schaft veel eBooks aan, maar we kunnen helaas niet élk eBook kopen. Als je op internet een eBook te koop ziet wil dat niet zeggen dat de bibliotheek dat eBook kan aanschaffen, de procedure voor het kopen van eBooks werkt heel anders dan voor papieren boeken. Er zijn verschillende redenen waarom we niet over kunnen gaan tot aanschaf van een eBook. Hieronder een aantal voorbeelden van problemen waarmee we regelmatig worden geconfronteerd.

1. De uitgever verkoopt het eBook alleen aan particulieren (en dus niet aan bibliotheken);
2. De uitgever verkoopt het eBook alleen via een studievereniging aan studenten (en dus niet aan bibliotheken);
3. Het eBook maakt deel uit van een pakket eBooks dat bijv. € 6000,- kost; de bibliotheek kan het eBook niet "los" aanschaffen;
4. Het eBook maakt deel uit van een pakket eBooks, de bibliotheek kan het niet aanschaffen, maar moet zich op het pakket abonneren en voortaan een jaarlijkse bijdrage betalen;
5. Het eBook kan gekocht worden door de bibliotheek, maar de prijs is 10 of  20 keer de normale prijs voor particulieren omdat het volgens de uitgever een “textbook” is en de uitgever de gederfde inkomsten alvast meerekent;
6. Het eBook kan gekocht worden door de bibliotheek, maar het kan maar door één gebruiker tegelijk gelezen worden (1User). Een volgende gebruiker kan het boek pas lezen als het weer ‘terugbezorgd’ is. Dat is een probleem als het boek verplichte literatuur is dat door veel studenten tegelijk op het laatste moment nog snel gelezen moet worden! Je verwacht toch dat een eBook onbeperkt door iedereen tegelijk gelezen kan worden? Niet dus. Technisch kan het, maar dan moet de bibliotheek meer betalen voor 3Users of voor Unlimited Access (zie vorige punt), en niet iedere aanbieder biedt die opties .
7. De bibliotheek heeft het eBook in het verleden aangeschaft met een licentie voor 1-gelijktijdige gebruiker. Soms kunnen we het omzetten naar een licentie voor meerdere gelijktijdige gebruikers. Helaas kan het ook gebeuren dat het boek als eBook inmiddels uit de handel is gehaald en dat de bibliotheek daarom alleen dat ene eerder aangeschafte  eBook voor 1-gelijktijdige gebruiker kan aanbieden.
8. Er is een eBook van de titel, maar helaas "unavailable in your country". Een licentie voor Nederland of Europe wordt niet aangeboden.
9. Het eBook kan gekocht worden door de bibliotheek, maar mag alleen online gelezen worden; het mag niet geprint of gedownload worden.

• Een bijkomend nadeel is ook dat eBooks niet beschikbaar zijn voor IBL: een eBook aangeschaft door een instelling kan alleen geraadpleegd worden door mensen die werken of studeren bij die instelling.

Conclusie

Het goede nieuws is dat we toch heel veel eBooks WEL aan kunnen schaffen: als losse titels, in pakketten of als onderdeel van een licentie.
Mocht je zelf een titel in gedachten hebben die je voor de bibliotheekcollectie aan wilt laten schaffen, geef die dan vooral door via het formulier Aanschafsuggestie.

Ordering eBooks - not that simple!

You submit a request to the library to purchase an eBook that you have noticed with an online vendor. But then … you are told that it cannot be purchased by the library. Why not?

Obstacles to the purchase of eBooks

The library buys a lot of eBooks, but we can’t buy every single eBook.  When you see an eBook for sale on the internet it does not mean that the library can puchase it. And buying a book from the range of eBooks works very different from buying a paper book. There are many reasons why we cannot purchase an eBook. Below are some examples of problems we are regularly confronted with.

1. The publisher only sells the eBook to private individuals (and not to libraries);
2. The publisher only sells the eBook to students (and not to libraries) through a study association;
3. The eBook is part of a package of eBooks that costs e.g. € 6000; the library cannot purchase the eBook separately;
4. The eBook is part of a package of eBooks, the library cannot purchase it, but must subscribe to the package and pay an annual contribution from now on;
5. The eBook can be purchased by the library, but the price is twenty times the normal price for individuals because according to the publisher it is a “textbook”;
6. The eBook can be purchased by the library, but it can only be read by one user at a time. The next user can only read the book once it has been ‘returned’. This is a problem if the book is mandatory literature that has to be read by many students at the same time at the last minute! You would expect that an eBook can be read by everyone (=unlimited users) at the same time? Not . Technically it can be done…
7. The library has purchased the eBook in the past with a license for 1 simultaneous user. Sometimes we can convert it to a license for multiple simultaneous users. Unfortunately, it can also happen that the title has been taken off the market as an eBook and therefore the library can only offer that one previously purchased eBook for 1 simultaneous user.
8. There is an eBook of the chosen title, but sadly it is "unavailable in your country". No license is available for The Netherlands or Europe.
9. The eBook can be purchased by the library, but may only be read online; it may not be printed or downloaded.

• An additional disadvantage is  that eBooks are not available for ILL: an eBook purchased by an institution can only be accessed by people that work or study in that institution.

Conclusion

The good news is that we CAN buy a lot of eBooks: as individual titles, in packages or as part of a license.
