Hijacked journals are a risk when you want to submit your articles for publication. Find out how our Lean Library Access browser extension alerts you when you visit a site that we consider to be a hijacked journal.
Authors already have to deal with predatory journals that will gladly take your Article Processing Charges (APCs) but which do not follow academic standards for good peer reviewed publishing. Hijacked journals are a new category of journals. These are fake websites pretending to be the official website for an existing journal. Authors may inadvertently pay to publish in these journals, only to discover later that they were duped.
Retraction Watch is tracking these hijacked journals and publishes a list of suspicious websites. Anyone can check this list before submitting an article. However, to make this easier for you, we have added these websites to our Lean Library Access browser extension. Once you have installed this extension, a pop-up will display when you visit one of the suspicious sites. It will warn you about the status of the site and refer you to this blog post for more information.
If you wonder about the validity of any of the reported sites, please contact our Open Access specialists or subject librarians and they will gladly help you out.
