scite is een vrij nieuwe service die laat zien waar en hoe een bepaald wetenschappelijk wordt geciteerd. Hiervoor gebruikt de dienst Smart Citations: “Smart Citations allow users to see how a scientific paper has been cited by providing the context of the citation and a classification describing whether it provides supporting or contrasting evidence for the cited claim.” Een deel van de functionaliteit is gratis en vrij toegankelijk, er is extra functionaliteit beschikbaar wanneer je een gratis of betaald account neemt.

Op de website van scite kun je een artikel opzoeken. Vervolgens zie je hoeveel citaties van het artikel bekend zijn bij scite. Voor elk citaat zie je de context waarin het is gebruikt en een score of het neutrale, contrasterende of ondersteunende citatie betreft. Het resultaat is te filteren naar soort citatie. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld handig zijn als je specifiek op zoek bent naar specifieke standpunten over het artikel.

Het is mogelijk om e-mail attenderingen voor publicaties en auteurs aan te maken. Ook rapportages en visualisaties van resultaten behoren tot de mogelijkheden, maar slechts zeer beperkt in de gratis versie.

Momenteel heeft scite vooral informatie over artikelen uit de biomedische en sociale wetenschappen.  Ook daar is de dekking uiteraard niet compleet. Toch kan het een aardig startpunt zijn om meer informatie te krijgen over bepaalde artikelen.

Wil je niet elk artikel opzoeken op de webpagina? Dan is er een gratis extensie beschikbaar voor je webbrowser. Deze toont bij elk artikel dat je opent of er citaties bekend zijn (zie afbeelding).

Gebruik jij scite of heb je er al eens naar gekeken? We horen graag je mening over deze toepassing. De functionaliteit van de browserextensie kan mogelijk ook geïntegreerd worden in onze Library Access extensie. We onderzoeken of dit een zinvolle toevoeging is. scite is a fairly new service that shows where and how a particular scientific paper is cited. To do this, the service uses Smart Citations: "Smart Citations allow users to see how a scientific paper has been cited by providing the context of the citation and a classification describing whether it provides supporting or contrasting evidence for the cited claim." Some functionality is freely available, additional functionality is available with a free or paid account.

On the scite website, you can look up an article. scite then shows how many citations of the article are known in its database. For each citation you see the context in which the citation occurs and a score whether it is a neutral, contrasting or supporting citation. It is possible to filter by type of citation. This can be useful for example if you are looking for specific views on the article.

You can set up e-mail notifications for publications and authors. Reports and visualizations of results are also among the possibilities, but this is very limited in the free version.

Currently, scite mainly has information on articles from the biomedical and social sciences.  Even there, the coverage is obviously not complete. Still, it can be a nice starting point to get more information about certain articles.

Don't want to look up every article on the webpage? Then there is an extension available for your web browser. This will show you whether there are any citations for each article you open (see image).
