De Bibliotheek lanceert een nieuw boekenfonds om onderzoekers te ondersteunen met hun open access monografieën. Het fonds zet zich in voor eerlijke en inclusieve open toegang tot het uitgeven van boeken. Dit omvat een focus op beginnende onderzoekers en wetenschappelijke uitgeverijen. Als gevolg hiervan zal het boekenfonds twee verschillende paden aanbieden.
Het feit dat OA boeken meer beperkingen met zich meebrengen als het gaat om financieringsstructuren, samen met het feit dat ECR's speciale aandacht nodig hebben in het wetenschapscommunicatiesysteem, om academische posities te kunnen bemachtigen of om toegang tot die posities te krijgen, is de reden waarom het boekenfonds nu is aangepast om aan deze dringende behoeften tegemoet te komen. Dit betekent dat (alleen) ECR's die hun monografieën OA willen publiceren bij gevestigde uitgeverijen, inclusief commerciële, een aanvraag kunnen doen bij het fonds.
Daarnaast wordt er steeds meer gediscussieerd over de noodzaak om naar een duurzamer en rechtvaardiger systeem van wetenschappelijke communicatie te gaan, gebaseerd op eerlijke OA principes. Dergelijke principes, gebaseerd op de Fair Open Access Alliance en vermeld in de SPARC Good Practice Principles with Scholarly Communication Services, stellen dat er voorrang moet worden gegeven aan modellen zonder winstoogmerk en gemeenschapsmodellen, zoals die worden gebruikt door wetenschappelijke uitgeverijen en diamond OA.
In deze lijn zijn onderzoekers die een OA-boek willen publiceren bij eerlijke open access-locaties, zoals society-uitgeverijen en wetenschappelijke genootschappen, ook welkom om een aanvraag in te dienen, aangezien deze uitgeverijen een community-gedreven aanpak hebben, wat meestal resulteert in eerlijkere en transparantere Book Processing Charges (BPC's).
Het boekenfonds biedt twee verschillende trajecten: een traject dat zich richt op beginnende onderzoekers en een ander traject dat zich richt op eerlijke open access venues. Het eerste pad richt zich specifiek op beginnende onderzoekers, terwijl het tweede pad zich richt op de bredere academische gemeenschap van Tilburg University die zich inzet voor eerlijke open toegang. In die zin wil Tilburg University Library een positieve open onderzoekscultuur bevorderen.
Het boekenfonds dekt niet de volledige BPC. In plaats daarvan biedt het gedeeltelijke financiële steun. Het werkt op een matchbasis, wat betekent dat het een deel van de BPC zal dekken op basis van bepaalde voorwaarden, tot een maximum van € 5000 (inclusief BTW), tot een maximum van 50% van de BPC, van de totale publicatiekosten per boek. Dit betekent dat auteurs die een aanvraag indienen zelf verantwoordelijk zijn voor het vinden van een match om de rest van de BPC te dekken.
Het fonds blijft actief zolang er bibliotheekfinanciering beschikbaar is.

The Library is launching a new book fund to support researchers with their open access monographs. The fund is dedicated to fostering fair and inclusive open access to book publishing. This includes a focus on early career researchers and scholarly-led publishing houses. As a result, the book fund will offer two different paths.
In Social Sciences and Humanities, publishing a (first) monograph, for instance, publishing a Ph.D. thesis into a monograph, is still very important for Early Career Researchers (ECR). Due to the high costs of publishing Open Access (OA) with highly regarded publishers and the limited funding options for many ECRs, they will often have to choose between advancing their careers or publishing Open Access.
The fact that OA books present more constraints when it comes to funding structures, adding to the fact that ECRs need special attention in the scholarly communication system, to be able to secure academic positions or to get access to them, is why the book fund has now been adapted to respond to these urgent needs. This means that (only) ECRs who would like to publish their monographs OA with established publishing houses, including commercial ones, can apply to the fund.
Additionally, there is increased discussion about the need to move towards a more sustainable and equitable scholarly communication system, based on fair OA principles. Such principles, based on the Fair Open Access Alliance, as well as stated in SPARC Good Practice Principles with Scholarly Communication Services, state that priority should be given to not-for-profit and community-driven models, like the ones employed by scholarly-led publishing houses and diamond OA.
In this line, researchers who wish to publish an OA book with fair open access venues, like society publishers and learned societies, are also welcome to apply, as these publishing houses have a community-driven approach, which usually results in more equitable and transparent Book Processing Charges (BPCs).
The book fund offers two distinct paths: one dedicated to early career researchers, and another focused on fair open access venues. While the first path targets early career researchers specifically, the second path aims to encompass the broader academic community at Tilburg University committed to fair open access. In this sense, Tilburg University Library aims to foster a positive open research culture.
The book fund does not cover the full BPC. Instead, it offers partial financial support. It works on a match basis, meaning it will match a portion of the BPC based on certain conditions, covering a maximum of € 5000 (including VAT), up to a maximum of 50% of the BPC, of the total publishing costs per book. This means that authors who apply are responsible for finding a match to cover the rest of the BPC.
The fund will operate while library funding is available.
