It can be quite difficult to know where and how to find the correct (financial) data for your research needs. Library and IT Services has a financial data support officer who assists researchers, lecturers and students in their research of financial data.

The financial data support officer is a trained master student who supports bachelor, master and PhD students and researchers from multiple TiSEM programs (e.g. finance, accountancy, and economics). He or she answers questions, directs you to the best databases for your financial data needs and explains how to use these databases. If you are unable to retrieve the data on your own, you can schedule an appointment for a more detailed instruction. However, the data officer will not run any searches or give you the data you need; you must still search for the data yourself. The service focuses on teaching you how to find and retrieve the data.

The email address for support is clearly visible on the frosted window of the Data Lab, and master in finance students can find a reference to the service in Canvas posts. If you are a lecturer, please refer to the support during your lessons, in each block’s kick-off lecture, or during the lectures in classes that use analysis of data collected from one of the databases.

Tilburg University provides access to 70 financial databases of which the most renowned are Datastream, Orbis, ThomsonOne, SDC Platinum and Compustat. You can find Datastream and SDC in the Datalab. The Datalab is a dedicated room in the university library with six computers equipped with software to retrieve financial data on companies as well as information about mergers and acquisitions. You can also use these databases to study board structures, compensations of board members, key financials and many more.

If you have problems using the financial databases, you can send an e-mail to lis-financialdatasupport@uvt.nl.
